Entering the Toddler Years

I started this law practice on January 6, 2019. I did not foresee: (1) the onset of COVID-19 around a year later, and (2) the attack on the US Capitol exactly two years later. However, here’s what I knew:

  • Predicting the future is impossible, so keep overhead and expectations low while adding staying flexible and humble.

  • Help others without thinking of payback or reward, and you’ll be content regardless of the result.

  • People are loyal and good, and they will help you out if you serve them well and reward their trust.

This law practice is still a work in progress, and I learn new things every day. But for this experiment in practicing law a little differently, 2019 was an encouraging start. By embracing transparency, approachability, and friendliness, I sought to deliver professional service for startups and nonprofits. In case you’ve forgotten, 2020 brought massive upheaval for everyone, and I was beyond lucky to be working from home before it was cool (and medically necessary). Clients still found me with phone calls and video calls, and against all odds, my second year in practice was an improvement over the first. One year ago, the third year of Shuru Law began with a direct assault on our American democracy, and we were all reminded of the need for vigilance and courage, as well as the fragility of our systems and laws. The pandemic continued to wreak havoc, and my law practice managed to build further, filling me with gratitude and reminding me how lucky I am.

As Shuru Law begins its fourth (!!!!) year, what will the future hold? Nobody knows. But I’m proud of how things have developed, and I’m optimistic that this experiment might just be sustainable. Could this be the year that more people add “Shuru Law” to their business profile? We’ll see.

Thanks to all of you who have supported me and this law practice through its birth and infancy. So many people have been so genuinely kind that I cannot begin to name them all. Now as the practice shifts into the toddler stage, I’ll try to keep the tantrums to a minimum. Best wishes to everyone for a healthy and fulfilling 2022. If you need help, want my kind of legal services, or just want to say hi, please reach out.
